Uniform Interpretation of Date on Checks and Standard Check Date Format

Effective July 1, 2018, the below guidelines on the uniform interpretation of date on checks andstandard check date format shall be implemented.  This is in compliance with Philippine Clearing House Corporation (PCHC) memoranda CICS OM No. 18-021 and Memo Circular Nos. 3436 and 3437.

1.    Date on checks may be written in alphanumeric or purely numeric format.
2.    For dates on checks written entirely in numerals, regardless of the partition symbol used (“/“, “-”, or “.”), the date shall be interpreted as in the Month-Day-Year (mm/dd/yyyy or mm-dd-yy) sequence.

The following purely numeric date formats shall be acceptable:

Acceptable format because it follows the Month-Day-Year (mm-dd-yyyy or mm-dd-yy) sequence.
These date formats shall be interpreted as checks issued on November 3, 2018.

3.    For dates on checks written in alphanumeric, the following formats shall be acceptable:

4.    In case the Presenting Bank sends out for clearing a check with unacceptable date format, the Drawee Bank shall be given the authority to decide whether the check is “stale” or “post dated” based on the prescribed date interpretation.

5.    All post-dated checks (PDCs) bearing date formats other than the acceptable purely numeric form illustrated above which were accepted and warehoused until June 30, 2018shall still be accepted until paid/negotiated.
